with the Soul

When U.N. official Jan Egeland reproved "the rich countries" for stingy donations to relieve the 2004 disaster in the Indian Ocean, the U.S. ponied up another $20 million to make a total donation of $35 million. To the Egeland eye, the little country of Spain gave more.

BUT, Jan Egeland, and others with similar backgrounds
who only count direct donations from national coffers,
DO NOT UNDERSTAND that in America, Charity begins
with the FREE choice to do something for others, with desires
originating in the soul, not from compulsion.

Consequently, what Americans are forced to donate openly
is just the tip of the ice berg.  That is just the amount that has been
FORCIBLY extracted from our pockets by the Government.

We don't even count that amount.

To see what citizens of the United States are actually giving you have to look at the total:

  1. American donations to the Red Cross

  2. American donations through their churches

  3. American donations through organizations

  4. American donations through fraternities and affiliations.

Total all these totals up and you will glimpse the total donations that Americans are making.

Then to get an even clearer picture you need to add in the tools provided by American companies, and also the personal, physical donations of time, brains and physical labor given to worthy causes by Americans.

The December 26 earthquake and tsunami has killed thousands in northern Indian Ocean coastal areas. PATA believes that:-
  • This is a major humanitarian tragedy; tourism is only one element
  • This is NOT an Asian crisis; it is a crisis confined to SOME PARTS of the Indian Ocean coast
  • It is business as usual across most of Asia and in most parts of many of the affected countries, indeed many travel destinations in Asia are heavily/fully booked
  • Many displaced tourists at affected destinations are choosing to stay in nearby hotels inland or in other resorts rather than go home
  • There is good solidarity among the travel industry, for example, competitors are helping each other out
  • Many travel industry operators are asking how/where to pledge money for relief

In the hours, days and weeks ahead, PATA will work with affected destinations as various crisis recovery strategies are put into place.

PATA sends its condolences to everyone who has lost family, friends and property in the Indian Ocean tidal wave disaster.

On a per capita basis NOBODY voluntarily does more than the citizens of the United States.  There are far more of those among us who -- because they have been given much -- are willing to give of their time, resources, and money.

Chubb Establishes $1 Million Fund for Asian Disaster Relief Efforts.. Warren, NJ, January 4, 2005 -- The Chubb Corporation [NYSE:CB] has established a $1 million fund for disaster relief efforts related to the recent earthquake and tsunami in Asia.

Chubb will make direct contributions to disaster relief organizations and will match contributions by its U.S. and international employees to such organizations on a two-for-one basis.

"We are saddened by the tremendous loss of life and destruction in Asia. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims of this tragedy and their families, said John Finnegan, chairman and CEO of The Chubb Corporation. We hope that contributions from Chubb, our employees and other members of the global business community will help ease the pain for those who unfortunately continue to suffer."

Founded in 1882, Chubb is one of the world s premier property and casualty insurers.

TIME, on a per capita basis,
who else in the world has so much to give?

Organizational Skills... Like an older brother, citizens of the United States are accustomed to taking charge in times of upheaval and making things happen.  That doesn't diminish the extreme importance of follow through where Americans are very weak; but with great, wasteful sweeps of ACTION, the United States does get things moving.  On a per capita basis, what other country can roll out so much at one time.

Others who don't have a sufficient supply of disposable income seem to think that throwing money at a problem is the best way to solve it.  Actually, money comes LAST in effectiveness.  The first and the best thing anyone can do for a disaster stricken area is to BE THERE, in person, not with your mouth open and gaping, but with your hands out and full of tools.

Shovels are worth more than money when there is mud to move -- although tools should be furnished or bought locally, both for speed and expediency.

A clear idea of what needs to be done and a sure knowledge of the most effective ways of getting it done count more than tools or money.

I believe that when it comes to giving real charity, the United States stands head and shoulders above any other nation on earth.

The End of Laissez-Faire : National Purpose and the Economy After the Cold War

History of U.S. Economy Since World War II  Many of the selections are by eminent figures in the field, and were written over a period of almost 50 years. The 105 selections are arranged in 10 parts: the economy at mid-century; highlights of change if the postwar era; changes in the structure of the economy; the evolution of the business sector; the labor force and labor organization; changing material conditions and the quality of life; government growth and government as manager; the financial superstructure, prices, and monetary policy; the foreign balance and foreign economic policy; and the long stagnation.

Mobilizing for Modern War : The Political Economy of American Warfare, 1865-1919  In this volume, Koistinen examines war planning and mobilizing in an era of rapid industrialization and reveals how economic mobilization for defense and war is shaped at the national level by the interaction of political, economic, and military institutions and by increasingly powerful and expensive weaponry.

When I came home from my tour of duty in Korea we sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge in the USS General William S. Mitchell.   There weren't any trumpets ringing in the air, but my heart was singing glad, about to burst.  As I looked forward to seeing again all the places and people I loved -- I knew what my country meant to me, home, a nation I was willing to defend with my very life if necessary and more importantly, a nation I was eager to help build up even better than I found it.

Just seeing a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge brings that salt-sea stained moment back with all its force.  I pray that I never forget, that so long as I live the United States of America will remain independent and free, a giant among nations raised up by God's Almighty hand to be an ensign of freedom for all nations.  Lin Stone.

That first day of school

Moonbeams are the original fuzzy kind of logic. If you've ever seen a tree turn into a gnome, or remember your first kiss upon the sweet silver grass, you won't want to miss this nostalgic essay of a way of life that maybe only seemed to be.

Friendship, by Ralph Waldo Emerson.  A ruddy drop of manly blood The surging sea outweighs, The world uncertain comes and goes, The lover rooted stays. I fancied he was fled, And, after many a year, Glowed unexhausted kindliness Like daily sunrise there. My careful heart was free again, -- O friend, my bosom said, Through thee alone the sky is arched, Through thee the rose is red, All things through thee take nobler form, And look beyond the earth, And is the mill-round of our fate A sun-path in thy worth. Me too thy nobleness has taught To master my despair; The fountains of my hidden life Are through thy friendship fair.

And then, we have these essays in the GENERAL ESSAYS category which don't seem to fit anywhere in particular:

By Reason Alone..  That Roosevelt can do no wrong is Burroughs's opinion; and that Burroughs is always right is Roosevelt 's opinion.  Both are agreed that animals do not reason.  They assert that all animals below man are automatons and perform actions only of two sorts 'mechanical and reflex 'and that in such actions no reasoning enters at all.  They believe that man is the only animal capable of reasoning and that ever does reason.

No man is an island, is an old saying that was meant to say that no man stood alone, but needed help from others, and gave strength to others.  But, here is the story of an island that was a man.  In the short history of time, there was one island that was a monument to a single man.  It starts out like a fairy tale.. Once upon a time there was a barren island.    This almost insignificant little man was sent off to this barren island and turned it into a mirror of his soul and the fulfillment of his vision.  One stick at a time he turned his barren island into a work of lasting, world-renowned beauty and peace, an island where the nightingales sang songs of singular wonder ne'er found elsewhere since this little man set down roots on a barren island, and bloomed.

Have you ever noticed that most of man's dreams are based on false assumptions. We dream of loping free with the wolves, but really don't like fleas. We dream of the security that lambs must feel, but don't want to be sheared. We dream of being lions, but gag at eating raw meat. We dream of being loved, but can't see the way or take the time to make ourselves lovable.

Was There EVER A Man On The Moon?  How far can reason alone take us from the beaten path of acknowledged history?

When Theories fail.. Petty science teachers can rage until doomsday that no two snowflakes are identical, but until every snowflake that has ever fallen or ever shall fall is matched against every other snowflake that has already fallen or ever shall try to fall -- the identical snowflake theory remains just a theory resting on its oars out there in lolly-gagging land.

Deliberate Fraud:  Evolutionists resort to the lowest forms of fraud in order to gain more believers. Down and Dirty with Darwin  Evolutionists are now feeling so battered that university professors advise their students not to discuss this theory with non-believers.  "Sounds like a religious cult to me," say some.

Global Warming freezes thermometers 57 years ago there was this silly theory running through the kitchen that said "the quickest way to freeze ice was to fill the ice trays with boiling water. There are still a few old house wives that believe it works. These days it's the pseudo-scientists that believe global warm winds tearing through the polar regions will make the ice caps freeze solid and start a new ice age!
